The Canary Islands Government has invited the state government to join its proposal to limit the purchase of housing by foreigners, after the minister of the branch, Isabel Rodríguez, announced meetings with the communities that have shown themselves in favor of the government plan submitted to the conference of presidents.
Canary Islands was one of them, and this Monday in the Governing Council it has valued that plan that the Government put on the table and that implies tripling public investment in housing to almost 7,000 million euros, although it has recalled that the community has gone further in its approaches to respond to the housing crisis.
"We positively value that offer made by President Pedro Sánchez, but we were going even further, there is a possibility of mobilizing more resources," explained the spokesperson for the Canary Islands Executive, Alfonso Cabello, at a press conference.
He referred, specifically, to the Canary Islands' idea of modifying the spending rule to allow public administrations to use their treasury surpluses to "boost public housing" in each region, especially considering that the Canary Islands "does not have a problem with its public debt, since it is the lowest in the entire State".
Cabello has described the conference of presidents last Friday in Barcelona as an "absolute failure", and has spoken of "ridicule" on the part of the State Government with respect to being able to propose solutions for the "main problems that affect citizens throughout the national territory", one of them being housing.
From the Canary Islands, he said, they will work "non-stop to try to provide a solution to the main challenges that the people of the Canary Islands have", and has invited the State to join, if it wants to, since they will be "delighted" to explain their proposals and dialogue, as they have "always" done.
After meeting this Monday with the Minister of Housing and Urban Agenda of the Basque Government, Denis Itxaso, the minister has announced that she will continue her round of negotiations with the communities that showed their approval of the central Executive's proposal in the coming weeks.
Although a specific date has not yet been established to meet with the Canary Islands representative in this matter, Pablo Rodríguez.
