The PSOE candidate for the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands after winning the elections last Sunday and obtaining 26 deputies in the regional Parliament, Juan Fernando López Aguilar, was convinced this Tuesday that he will be the next president of the Canary Islands "because that is what the people of the Canary Islands want and have said at the polls".

The electoral result in the archipelago "clearly expresses a mandate for change", which López Aguilar said he will work to make a reality and thus respond to the "immense flow of hope and change" deposited in the socialists, "to make a better Canary Islands".

In an interview on Antena 3 TV, López Aguilar explained that in the Canary Islands "there has been a historic turnaround", since the PSOE becomes the first political force and wins 100,000 votes, the same as Coalición Canaria loses and which add up to the 70,000 that the PP would have lost. López Aguilar also highlighted the "vertebrating" character of the Socialist Party in the Canary Islands, since "it has been the only one that has obtained representation in all the islands".

Regarding the post-election pacts to form a government, Juan Fernando López Aguilar assured that, although it will be an exercise in responsibility to contemplate the different options, in the Canary Islands "the mandate is clear" and it is "that there be a change and a new time opens". A message that he said "CC and PP have also received", since the policy they have carried out in recent years "has been completely unauthorized".

In any case, López Aguilar, who said he had already spoken by telephone with the representatives of the other formations, warned that the polls have given a very clear verdict in favor of change and that this "cannot be ignored by anyone who has democratic sensitivity".

During the interview, López Aguilar referred to the issue of immigration and expressed his dismay at the human drama that is being experienced in the case of the 26 castaways picked up by the Spanish ship "Monte Falcó". López Aguilar pointed out that it is a problem not only for the Canary Islands, but for all of Europe and that we must talk about it fairly and work hard.

In this sense, he defended the application of criteria of humanity, legality and rescue at sea, "which is the first international obligation in the face of a humanitarian drama", something that Spain fulfills exemplarily, in order to proceed from there to "referral and repatriation".
