The PSOE of Lanzarote has denounced the "inexplicable delay" in the execution of the Playa Honda underpass, a strategic infrastructure for the municipality of San Bartolomé and for the island as a whole. According to the PSOE, "this is a project promoted in the previous legislature, under the mandates of Ángel Víctor Torres as president of the Government of the Canary Islands and María Dolores Corujo as president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote".
"It is inadmissible that a work so long-awaited and necessary to improve road safety, mobility and connectivity between Playa Honda and the airport remains unexecuted due to the negligence of those who govern today," denounced the general secretary of the PSOE in Lanzarote and Member of Congress, María Dolores Corujo.
The PSOE recalls that "it was in June 2022 when the then Minister of Public Works, Transport and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands, Sebastián Franquis, signed the tender file for the execution of this work". From that moment, the deadline was opened to receive offers with a planned investment of 3,290,613 euros. The project included the construction of an underpass under the LZ-2 with the aim of improving connectivity between Playa Honda and the industrial and commercial area located on the other side of the highway.
The project, initially drafted by the Cabildo de Lanzarote and subsequently updated and adapted by the technical services of the regional Ministry, includes the creation of a transversal axis under the LZ-2 that serves as communication between Playa Honda and the industrial and commercial area located on the other side of the highway. The action planned the construction of a new underground passage, parallel to the existing one, designed not only for road traffic, but also to facilitate pedestrian and cyclist passage, thus improving accessibility and promoting more sustainable mobility.
"The Playa Honda underpass was planned, financed and tendered in the previous legislature and after three years, it should be finished. However, it remains stalled due to the lack of management of those who are responsible today," said Corujo.
A lack of respect for the residents of San Bartolomé
The socialist leader quipped that "not even the works of the Escorial took so long", emphasizing that "it is incomprehensible that an infrastructure that left all administrative procedures completed in 2022 remains unexecuted". "They have filled the newspapers with photographs with yellow vests and empty headlines after three years of work. What is needed is for the works to be completed and the work that has already been done to be respected. It is a lack of respect for the residents of San Bartolomé, who have been waiting for a real solution for years."
"The Playa Honda underpass cannot remain in the drawer while other unjustifiable expenses are prioritized. This is a useful, fair and transformative work. And like everything that is planned with the general interest in mind, it is designed to improve people's lives," concluded Corujo.
