Leticia Padilla, candidate for Mayor of Arrecife for Lanzarote en Pie - Sí Podemos, regrets that "the Arrecife City Council and the other competent institutions, such as the Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands," have looked the other way during the last years of a very serious housing crisis and an increase in the cost of housing, which thousands of families residing in the municipality have suffered". In response, Padilla is committed to ensuring that the upcoming legislature is "the one of the effective right to housing in Arrecife and Lanzarote."
To this end, she advocates allocating funds to specific housing policies and commits "to the effective regulation of holiday rentals in all neighborhoods of Arrecife." In addition, Lanzarote en Pie - Sí Podemos states that they will launch a municipal housing office, "which will allow renting with the City Council acting as an intermediary, to offer guarantees to both tenants and owners."
The creation of protocols in case of evictions, the refusal to work with entities that carry out evictions of vulnerable families as a measure of pressure, and the control of the public housing stock will be other commitments, already shared with groups in favor of decent housing, that Leticia Padilla's team wants to make a reality in the municipality of Arrecife.
"Real estate speculation and the neglect of institutions in the face of it have brought situations of enormous pain that we, from the opposition, have tried to make visible and support to the extent of our possibilities during these four years. But it is time for Arrecife and Lanzarote to have institutions that prioritize the real problems of the people and especially of vulnerable families, and that is why a government of Lanzarote en Pie - Sí Podemos is necessary," Padilla said.
Call to mobilize to stop an eviction in Argana Alta
From the candidacy of Lanzarote en Pie - Sí Podemos, a call has also been made to the population of the island "to mobilize against the eviction of a family from Argana Alta, whom the financial entity Bankia wants to take out of their house."
"This family, with four children, was paying the former owner of the house, which was later mortgaged and transferred to Bankia, even when he lost the property, so they have been victims of fraud and, despite this, the family always wanted to acquire the house, having reached an initial agreement for the purchase in installments," they say from the formation.
However, they point out that, "in recent weeks they have once again felt the threat of eviction, by a bank that we have all bailed out." Therefore, they are calling to stop "this injustice", encouraging people to come on Friday, May 24, at 10 in the morning, to Felo Monzón Street in the capital's neighborhood.
