The Island Water Council has already started the process of revising the fourth cycle of the Hydrological Plan and the third cycle of the Flood Risk Plan of Floods of Lanzarote and La Graciosa for the six-year period 2027-2033.
The president of the Cabildo and head of the Water Consortium and the Island Water Council of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, has pointed out that "these three institutions are now focused on launching the projects necessary to address the water emergency", approved by the General Board of the Island Water Council of Lanzarote on January 11.
“We are addressing the urgent, which is the water emergency, but we continue to work on the important, the hydrological planning and the flood plan of Lanzarote and La Graciosa”, added Betancort.
It should be remembered that the Government Council of the Canary Islands approved last August the third cycle of the hydrological plan and the second cycle of flood risk management corresponding to the six-year period 2021-2027.
These planning documents include more than 200 actions that aim to guarantee both the quality of the water and ensure the demand for residents in Lanzarote and La Graciosa, as well as alleviate the effects of droughts and possible floods in population centers.
“These two essential plans were not approved by the previous government team of the Cabildo de Lanzarote in a timely manner, that is, in December 2021, and that meant that the European Commission presented a claim for non-compliance in 2022”, according to the Councilor for Water of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Domingo Cejas.
“Now we are moving forward in the new update and soon the public exhibition period will begin and the basic documents that initiate the procedure of the fourth cycle of the Hydrological Plan and the third cycle of the Flood Plan for the period 2027-2033 will be published on the website of the Island Water Council”, adds Cejas.
The hydrological planning and flood risk management documents are mandatory, in accordance with Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2000, in cycles of six years.
