The members of Sociedad El Porvenir are celebrating. The headquarters has managed to eliminate the debt of 60,000 euros that it had on its back and that threatened the premises. Coalición Canaria (CC) San Bartolomé congratulates the Sociedad El Porvenir “for having eliminated in just two years all its debts, thus freeing itself from the yoke to which the City Council had subjected it. The City Council had threatened to expropriate the headquarters of this historic Institution for this debt in respect of IBI”, says the secretary of the nationalist formation, Eduardo Díaz.

CC San Bartolomé recalls that “in July 2020 the socialist government group communicated to members its intention to take away the management of this Institution for not being able to face the aforementioned debt, thus ignoring the agreement that has always existed between both parties by which the Society was exonerated from the payment of this municipal tax in return for ceding its facilities for institutional events or the use of other groups”.

An attitude denounced at the time by both CC, which already warned that "the socialists saw it as more profitable to appropriate the building and the land where it is located than to contribute to reactivating the historic Institution", as well as by the board of directors itself, which publicly lamented the attempt by the socialist government group to expropriate the Society's premises, “even going so far as to issue collections and embargoes for prescribed tax concepts”, as it denounced verbatim.

“Despite this abuse, the coercion and threats from the socialist government group, Sociedad El Porvenir has managed to remain open these years, even functioning as a Senior Citizens Center and hosting various cultural and sports groups in the municipality, thus giving its members a lesson in overcoming very hard times that brought the Society to the brink of closure”, highlights Díaz.

In this sense, the municipal spokesperson for CC, David Rocío, announces that the nationalist formation will submit a motion to the plenary session this Wednesday requesting the granting of a municipal subsidy to help this almost centennial Society recover the important social and cultural function it has played in the municipality since its creation, as was recognized in its day by the City Council itself when it awarded it the Ajey Prize for cultural work.
