The current Minister of Economy and Finance of the Government of the Canary Islands has just made public a statement in which he announces the end of his political career, after the poor results of CC in Gran Canaria, a formation that he chaired until last Sunday night.

In a statement sent to the media, Mauricio states that "given the various speculations I have heard about my intervention in the politics of pacts, I would like to clarify that on the night of May 27 I decided to leave political activity."

The nationalist leader states that "I communicated to the party that they should replace me in my responsibilities --and as it is established: the Vice President must automatically occupy the Presidency of the party in Gran Canaria--, because in this, as in sports, the coach or manager must resign."

Mauricio adds in his note that "now we only have to wait a couple of weeks, for the replacement to take place in the Ministry of Economy and Finance."

He recalls that an old saying says that "politics is a long race to the final defeat." After this, he considers that "this is my final defeat. Let it be said without any bitterness. It is as logical as the cycle of life."

The Minister of Economy, former spokesman for CC in Madrid, says he also feels "the peace of mind of knowing, in view of the results, that the Canary Islands are in good hands: the Canarian Coalition has the best position to form a Government."

José Carlos Mauricio recalls that he is 65 years old, and adds that "sometimes I think that the race has been too hard and too long. At this age, another old saying is often remembered: "The best things in life are the simple or easy things".

"And, suddenly," he concludes, "you get a huge hurry to recover lost time," he concludes.

On the night of May 27, the Canarian Coalition in Gran Canaria obtained the worst results in its history, obtaining only one parliamentarian in Gran Canaria, a councilor in the Cabildo who will not be decisive and being, for the first time, out of representation in the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
