The Haría City Council has unanimously approved in the extraordinary Plenary session held this Monday an institutional declaration through which it urges the Government of the Canary Islands to adopt measures to eradicate the cochineal plague in the municipality.
The local Corporation requests the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty, firstly, to recognize that the plague is not contained on the Island and, secondly, to help the municipality from the incentives and subsidies of the actions carried out by the owners of the affected plots. It also urges the Ministry to process the granting of subsidies to the town councils so that they can implement eradication measures with the authorization of the owners.
In this line, the Government group warns, considering the impact of this plague, "that this has not been able to be contained, so it considers that the appropriate measures should be taken, with the prior mediation of the affected owners".
On the other hand, they point out "the delay of more than a decade in the declaration of the cochineal as a plague, being extended to a high level in the municipality, so it cannot be expected that the residents are the ones who assume a forced expense on the part of an administration that did not know how to act with agility and in the term that corresponded to it".
Finally, the Corporation proposes that, prior to an eradication action, "the autonomous Government determines the economic value of the same and that it firmly subsidizes it, in such a way that the owners can pay for the action without incurring additional costs".
