The César Manrique Foundation has been responsible for giving the opening speech of the festivities in honor of the Patron Saint of the Canary Islands, the Virgen de Candelaria, in the Tenerife municipality of Candelaria this past Wednesday, July 6.
The council wanted to pay tribute to "one of the most emblematic figures of Canarian culture and thought." "César Manrique is the most recognizable and beloved island artist by the Canarians, and with total certainty, the one who has given the greatest projection to this our land in the world," said the mayor of Candelaria, Mari Brito, in a statement.
The participation of the Foundation in these Tenerife festivities arises within the framework of an initiative promoted by the council four years ago so that each August a different island would begin the festivities. This year Lanzarote was chosen.
With the proclamation of Alfredo Díaz, as representative of the César Manrique Foundation, the starting gun was fired for this celebration. The event began at 9:30 p.m. in the Basilica of Candelaria and included the musical intervention of Pancho Corujo from Lanzarote accompanied on the piano by Juan Francisco Parra.
The event will be broadcast on delay by Televisión Canaria this Thursday, August 7 at 10:00 p.m. and by channel 2 of Televisión Española.
