The Councilor for Tourist Centers of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Carlos Espino (PSOE), stated on Friday morning during the Council of the Biosphere Reserve that the illegalities of the hotels "are not a concatenation of errors: it is an organized plot dedicated to subverting the regulations." Espino made a special mention to the technicians in charge of drafting the report and to the lawyer of the Cabildo "who have been questioned in their professionalism" and described these questionings as "ignoble and intolerant." "Those who attacked us have demanded silence from us because they have told us that we are harming Lanzarote's tourist image," Espino said.
The councilor assured that "today the operating system has become clear: there is no room for negotiation or anything here." Espino believes that the illegalities of the hotels have caused two damages: to legality and democracy and to the credibility of the institutions, and he asked that these illegalities have criminal consequences. He also expressed his "consternation" that the courts are not the ones acting against all this."
For his part, the island secretary of UGT in Lanzarote, César Reyes, also asked that responsibilities be determined and that the process be carried out without delay and with transparency.
The representative of the PP in the Council, Eugenio Hernández, pointed out that from now on "there will be a market with respect to compensation" and that "the Cabildo's list will be there."
For his part, the representative of El Guincho, Pedro Hernández, pointed out that a tribute must be paid to the island's society that has made the Cabildo react and asked that the work be concluded. "Let Justice finish doing its job and not politics," he said.
The representative of CC, Pedro Sanginés, pointed out that the Cabildo has done a magnificent job" and wondered how the general interest is considered concluded. He offered his hand to the Government for this process and asked for a consensus effort.
TO THE PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
Fernando Ruiz, from the César Manrique Foundation, requested that the Cabildo's report be taken to the Prosecutor's Office and assured that "the dignity of those who have been unfairly harassed must be compensated." He demanded public apologies from all those who have questioned those who have defended legality and expressed his gratitude to the president of the Cabildo for her "courage."
The representative of the hoteliers, José González, questioned whether businessmen can wait for everything to be regularized through legislative modifications and urged the Cabildo to "resume channels with the city councils and the Government of the Canary Islands." He assured that the Parliament of the Canary Islands is the appropriate place to debate this issue and stressed that the hotels, despite all the illegalities, have been built on consolidated urban land. This intervention had a harsh response from Councilor Carlos Espino
