The president of the Lanzarote Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, received several representatives of the non-profit cultural association 'César Manrique Sculpture' last Wednesday, whose objective is to place a public sculpture dedicated to César Manrique in Lanzarote on his centenary.
In the meeting, according to the institution, the possibility of financial collaboration by the Cabildo was discussed, since although this association started the 'Por César' campaign to raise funds with the aim of having civil society finance the work, donations have not reached 20% of the cost of the work, which is estimated at 101,000 euros.
The president of the association, Alfredo Matallana, the vice president, Marisol Álvarez, and the treasurer, Roberto Fuentes, attended the meeting. Matallana conveyed to the president the intention to locate the sculpture in the 'mouth of the dock', in front of the Arroyo's house, and requested collaboration to carry out all the necessary procedures through the Heritage Department.
Corujo conveyed the Cabildo's support
The work, made of bronze and weighing more than a ton, will be executed by the artist from Gran Canaria, Manolo González, under the name 'César's Gaze'. The sculptor's idea, in his own words, is to capture "César's way of seeing the world, so that people can sit down, touch the sculpture and, in turn, it is accessible to anyone who wants to feel the artist".
For her part, the president of the Cabildo expressed her gratitude. "The island institution will always support anything that respectfully preserves the memory of our most international artist. A well-deserved tribute, which will be made by a world-renowned artist with great works in different parts of the Canary Islands and who with this work will pay a dignified and respectful tribute to César Manrique", said María Dolores Corujo.
The president of the Cultural Association 'César Manrique Sculpture' thanked Corujo for her collaboration and expressed his intention that "the sculpture be made by civil society, which is actually part of the institutions". The Cabildo reminds that the sculpture can also be financed through individual donations in the account ES31 2038 7248 2760 00155685.
