The Coalición Canaria group in the San Bartolomé City Council has presented a motion in the consistory urging the institution to have more control over the installation of future mobile phone antennas, as well as to prepare a report on their status and possible damages.
"Progress and technological development are good, as long as they do not produce a high cost on human health. We know that mobile telephony is considered one of the most significant innovations of recent decades in terms of communication, but we also know that last year, without going any further, 50 percent of the calls received through 112 (Emergency and Urgency Service) referred to problems and complaints from citizens about mobile telephony and its damages. Therefore, we perceive a high social alarm regarding this issue," they point out from the nationalist party.
"Given that the scientific community does not clearly express itself on the safety of these antennas, from Coalición Canaria, with the precautionary principle, it is determined that governments have the duty to take preventive actions in order to prevent damage before scientific evidence is established," they comment from the party.
From Coalición Canaria, they urge the city council to hold neighborhood conferences on the Installation and Operation of Mobile Phone Antenna Infrastructures in the municipality (Municipal Ordinance number 38), with the participation of different experts in the field. The nationalists also request the preparation of a report of all the antennas that are in the municipality, with respect to the perceptive licenses as an industrial activity that it is, as well as the realization of periodic measurements, carried out by technicians independent of the companies involved.
On the other hand, Coalición Canaria de San Bartolomé asks the consistory to develop a municipal plan on the current and future mobile phone installations within the General Urban Planning Plan of the municipality.
