The Island Union of CCOO in Lanzarote held a General Assembly last Friday, January 18, in which more than a hundred delegates participated and in which the union's management presented its management report for the past year. In turn, there was a debate on how to face a year "of important challenges" in the face of the latest social events "such as the increase in cases of gender violence, the rise of the ultra-right and the possible loss of rights and freedoms." According to CCOO, the debate emphasized that this organization will be part of "the feminist offensive to maintain the rights and freedoms achieved" and "stop the advance of policies marked by the ultra-right", setting its sights on future mobilizations and the strike scheduled for March 8. "The active fight for equality and against sexist violence must be united now, an anti-fascist demand," they state from the union.
The assembly also raised the new challenges in collective bargaining" since this year two of the main agreements in the province expire, such as commerce and hospitality, where employers are already lamenting the tourism forecasts for this year and the uncertainty produced by Brexit, with amnesia of the years of high profits and price increases, while the salary increase for workers in these sectors is around 1%", says CCOO.
The union also expresses "the need to pressure the Government to comply with its promise to modify the Labor Reform of the Popular Party and, if not, organize mobilizations immediately.
Strike of garbage collection workers in Yaiza
Likewise, the CCOO assembly gave its "total support" to the colleagues of Hernández Bello, a company that is in charge of the waste collection service in the municipality of Yaiza, "in the face of continuous breaches of the agreement, the total abandonment of workers and the maintenance of trucks", announcing that they will start a strike on February 11 where CCOO will carry out acts of protest and support rallies.
Finally, CCOO Lanzarote appreciates "the high participation and values very positively the open debate in which a year of high labor conflict is foreseen for the conquest of lost rights and intense social mobilization."
