Coalición Canaria summoned representatives of associations, clubs and groups of the different sports practiced on the island, to find out "what their current situation is, what their main demands and needs are and, above all, what they expect from the institutions". The nationalists assure that they are committed to agreeing on a roadmap with sports to "return the sector to its lost prominence"
From CC they point out that the meeting is part of the ‘Lanzarote needs you’ project, which in turn is part of a broader program that covers the entire archipelago and that under the title ‘Canary Islands needs you, let's project the future together’, is touring all the islands and collecting "the feelings of each and every one of the sectors that are part of society".
This Tuesday's event in Lanzarote took place at the San Francisco Javier Sociocultural Center and was attended by the National Organization Secretary of Coalición Canaria, David Toledo, the island Organization Secretary, Echedey Eugenio, and the former Director General of Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, José Francisco Pérez Martín, in addition to other public and organic positions of the nationalist formation on the island.
The nationalists explain that among the main concerns is "the delay in the payment of aid to sports and the elimination of the 100% subsidy for travel are some of the most painful". According to CC, the sports representatives criticized that “the little help that arrives, does so late and badly” and the clubs are being forced to advance money "that they do not know if the Government of the Canary Islands is going to return to them later".
From CC they point out that they also spoke of "the lack of an educational-sports infrastructure plan and the need to recover the link between native sports and education", asking that "the program be brought back to the classrooms". In addition, the nationalists add that the clubs also request the same for the project of "attention to diversity in sports, which had also begun in the CC stage at the head of the General Directorate of Sports, and which has currently disappeared".
Likewise, Coalición Canaria adds that the clubs took advantage of the presence of the former Director General of Sports "to thank him for his attention and availability during the entire stage he was in charge of the Area", and criticized that the current person in charge “we don't even know him and he doesn't deign to pick up the phone”.
After listening to and learning about the problems of island sports from its representatives, Toledo expressed "the commitment of the nationalists to agree with them on a roadmap that returns sports to the prominence lost after the Covid-19 pandemic".
“There were many activities canceled at that time and many facilities that were closed, without the clubs or the population being able to do anything and without any response from the responsible institutions”, he emphasizes, adding that “it is time to make decisions and design effective policies that help us recover grassroots sports”.
For his part, the island Organization Secretary, Echedey Eugenio, recalls that the fact that many of the sports disciplines were suspended "motivated many young people to opt for other types of activities, even in many cases abandoning all physical activity".
“We must not forget that investing in sports is investing in health and in values such as respect, trust, the desire to excel and teamwork. All values that are closely linked to grassroots sports and that our children need to build a healthy and strong youth”, asserts Eugenio.
Coalición Canaria assures that the ‘Lanzarote needs you’ program continues on Wednesday afternoon with the celebration of a meeting at the Mozaga teleclub, to which the island's wrestling clubs are invited to participate.
