The Cabildo of Lanzarote and the mayors of the island's town councils have agreed to increase police controls and toughen sanctions against those who fail to comply with the regulations issued by the health authorities to stop the spread of covid-19 in the course of the usual meeting they hold to analyze the evolution of the pandemic on the island.

“During these last months we have limited ourselves to informing the population about their responsibilities in the face of the virus. However, the increase in positive cases and hospital admissions in recent days forces us to act more forcefully and adopt sanctioning measures to compensate for the lack of solidarity and responsibility shown by those who are violating the regulations and putting not only their lives but also those of others at risk,” explained María Dolores Corujo after the meeting.

The president also informed the mayors of the meeting held this Friday with the Deputy Delegate of the Government in Las Palmas, María Teresa Mayans, and the commanders of the State Security Forces on the island in which measures were adopted to improve the protocols of action, reinforce surveillance in public places and intensify access controls in spaces with limited capacity, “especially on beaches where worrying scenes are taking place.”

María Dolores Corujo and the mayors also agreed to maintain the suspension of the celebration of mass sporting and cultural events “because at this time the greatest asset to protect is the health of the people, especially that of the most vulnerable.”

The political representatives once again appealed to the responsibility of the citizens to make “correct use of the mask, maintain social distance and correct and constant hand hygiene to limit the spread of this pathogen.”
