The Cabildo of Lanzarote and the City Council of Teguise have made available to the residents of La Graciosa the maritime transport of waste from the cleaning of septic tanks in the urban center of Caleta del Sebo "in order to make effective the environmental recommendations given by the different administrations and because the island of La Graciosa does not have a wastewater treatment plant", according to the City Council.
Precisely, Citizens (Cs) demanded last week "an urgent solution to the collapse of septic tanks in La Graciosa, especially in Caleta del Sebo", a fact that the orange formation claimed was generating "numerous problems on the island".
In a statement, Teguise states that both the City Council and the Cabildo "have been taking measures to guarantee the good quality of the waters periodically since December 2015 in order to avoid the discharge of wastewater into the marine environment" and points out that "based on the report of the municipal technician that explains the need to promote contracting with a specialized company in the sector, the cleaning of municipal filtering wells and septic tanks has been carried out during these days". An action that points out that it has been extended "to those neighbors whose septic tanks allow the controlled evacuation of the discharges generated by their activity, thus preventing them from filtering into the subsoil".
The mayor of Teguise, Oswaldo Betancort, has thanked the Cabildo for its involvement and assured that "we will work together to provide all the necessary resources for the removal and transport of wastewater until the completion of the sewerage network and wastewater treatment plant in the urban center of Caleta del Sebo". "We are aware of the patience that the residents of La Graciosa are having in the face of the development of an annoying and costly project, but absolutely necessary for the island, and we also understand that we must ensure proper sanitary conditioning while the work is not completed and the sewerage network of the eighth island is not a reality", he said in this regard.
