The Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Canary Institute of Housing (ICAVI), directed by Pino de León, has published this week a new call for aid to combat depopulation in rural areas corresponding to the 2026 fiscal year.

The program has a global allocation of 5 million euros and will benefit 58 Canary municipalities with less than 20,000 inhabitants, with the aim of promoting the rehabilitation of housing in rural areas, improving habitability conditions, and encouraging population retention in the least populated areas of the Archipelago. Interested municipalities can submit their projects from today until June 15.

In Lanzarote, Yaiza will receive 280,765.47 euros, followed by San Bartolomé (200,627.73 euros), Tinajo (66,671.48 euros), and Haría (60,108.64 euros).

The distribution of credit was approved by the Monitoring Committee of the agreement signed between the Canary Institute of Housing and the Canary Federation of Municipalities (Fecam), based on criteria of population (50%), number of applicants registered in the Public Registry of Applicants for Protected Housing in the Canary Islands (30%), and a fixed criterion based on inter-municipal solidarity (20%).

The beneficiary municipalities will be responsible for processing, managing, and allocating the subsidies according to the criteria established in the program.

Among the eligible actions are the rehabilitation of isolated dwellings or interiors of buildings; renovations aimed at improving accessibility and adapting homes for people with reduced mobility or functional diversity; installation of home automation systems aimed at promoting personal autonomy; as well as interventions in kitchens, bathrooms, and toilets to guarantee minimum habitability conditions.

Likewise, the program includes actions to improve energy efficiency and works on isolated dwellings outside of planning regulations when these allow for their regularization.

By islands, Tenerife has the largest number of beneficiary municipalities, with 17 municipalities; followed by La Palma, with 13; Gran Canaria, with 12; La Gomera, with 6; Lanzarote, with 4; and Fuerteventura and El Hierro, with 3 municipalities each.
