The Arrecife City Council has denied that its intention is to terminate the contract with Volconsa as of September 30, as stated this Thursday by Cándido García, delegate of Intersindical Canaria. On the contrary, the Consistory hopes to put the service out to tender "this month." This was stated by the Councilor for Sports, Francisca Toledo, who does not understand the attitude adopted by the workers, who are carrying out a strike day this Friday and have staged a protest inside the City Council.
Toledo has insisted that from the Consistory "no one has spoken, nor has said anything about terminating the contract or about putting anyone on the street." "Today I spoke with one of the administrators and he has no news that the workers are on strike, they are the same as us. He has not communicated to any worker that we are going to invalidate the contract," the councilor assured. Even, the mayor, in addition to insisting that the City Council is "working on the next tender" and has announced that if it is delayed, a formula will be sought to rescue or seize the service.
Francisca Toledo does not understand that the workers have carried out this strike day, which "has not been notified at any time." The workers began their protest at 10:00 a.m. in front of the doors of the City Council. Later, they went to the Recova and entered the interior of the Consistory. The Local Police of Arrecife has called their attention for using horns in the protest.
Toledo has assured that the City Council "has no intention of leaving 18 workers on the street," as Cándido García feared, and has recalled that "the specifications include that the new company will have to subrogate the employees." Therefore, she believes that the workers "at least" should have gone to the City Council and announced that they were on strike. "Just as they have gone to the media, it is on their way to tell us, at least to the Department of Sports," she questioned.
In this sense, she has stated that not even the clubs know that the Volconsa workers are on strike. "The matches start this afternoon and it is already competition, when the most damage is done, although they are within their rights. No one is aware that the facilities are going to be closed," said Francisca Toledo.
