The Cabildo of Lanzarote has reported that around 6,000 students from Lanzarote will benefit during the next school year from a nursing service, a pioneering initiative launched thanks to the Corporation's commitment to the Municipal Implementation Project of School Health Services, promoted by the Nursing Association of Las Palmas.
From the Cabildo they explain that the program will focus on "promoting healthy, positive and sustainable lifestyles in the students of ten centers in Tías, San Bartolomé and Tinajo", as was revealed in the presentation of the project. The event was attended by the president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, the island councilor for Education, Myriam Barros, the president of the Nursing Association of Las Palmas, Rita Mendoza, and the member of Nursing, Begoña Hernández.
María Dolores Corujo explained that with this pilot plan in Lanzarote "it will be studied whether school nursing services should be extended to the whole of the Canary Islands according to cost and effectiveness data".
"This strategy has a very low cost for the administrations involved and, in turn, will avoid expenses in welfare benefits for health and social services in the future," said the president.
"When we were in the opposition, we already proposed that a school health service be created in the island's educational centers, so now, as a councilor of the government group, I can only support this initiative that will benefit the educational community," said the Minister of Education, Myriam Barros.
Regarding the costs, the president of the Nursing Association of Las Palmas, Rita Mendoza, indicated that the estimate corresponding to the service for each assigned center "exceeds 25,000 euros".
In addition, Mendoza insisted that one of the objectives is to ensure that nurses have a presence and leadership in schools, "with a firm commitment to this public health project based on the needs of students, families and school staff".
Likewise, the president of the Nursing Association of Las Palmas explained that the contents addressed by the Health Promotion and Prevention Strategy in the National Health System will be applied, focused on "promoting healthy lifestyles, emotional well-being, prevention of addictions, positive parenting, sexuality, accidents and environmental health", among others.
