Alternativa Ciudadana-25 de Mayo is no longer officially a political party. This has been decreed by the National Court in a ruling, thus dissolving a party that even formed a government in the Arrecife City Council.
One of the visible faces of the formation, which began its journey in 2003, is Andrés Barreto, who has explained on Radio Lanzarote - Onda Cero the reason for the National Court's ruling: "Law 3/2015 on the control of political organizations stipulated that all organizations had to communicate, within a period of three years, whether the party's positions were in accordance with the regulations or not, and they also had to indicate what the real situation was."
Barreto points out that this communication from the Ministry of the Interior arrived by mail at the home of a member of Alternativa Ciudadana, who at that time "neither resided in that house nor lived in Lanzarote", so the formation did not receive that information.
However, Andrés Barreto emphasizes that there was no "motivation to invalidate the party" in the formation, but that the situation pushed them to do so. "We held a meeting, and we had to comply for a fundamental reason, and that is that if we did not state the cause of the party's situation, we could be ordered to pay the costs, and everyone knows what that entails", says Barreto.
Therefore, an end is put to a journey in politics that began in 2003, obtaining in those elections two councilors in Arrecife, and one in San Bartolomé, Teguise and Tías, in addition to a councilor in the Cabildo of Lanzarote. They also ran in the following elections, and the last ones they attended under the AC-25M acronym were those of 2011, since in 2015 they were included in Somos Lanzarote.
The extinction of AC-25M forces the paralysis of the legal actions in which the party was involved as a popular accusation. However, Andrés Barreto emphasizes that most of them "were assumed by Carlos Meca", former councilor of Podemos in the Cabildo of Lanzarote. "Therefore, the complaints we filed in their day are still alive, and I am convinced that they will be clarified", says Barreto, one of them being for the management of Inalsa.
"The ideas are still there and I think there are possibilities to participate again"
Alternativa Ciudadana - May 25 disappears as a party, but not the ideas. This is how Andrés Barreto summarizes it, who even believes that "there are possibilities to participate again".
"The projects are projects, but the ideas remain. Maybe it's time to analyze how far all this can go. AC-25M has been around for a certain time, and even being with Somos, we were actively and jointly participating with Podemos", explains Andrés Barreto, who takes the opportunity to lash out at those who claim that they "did not make possible" an agreement with Podemos, which forced them in 2015 to leave the lists to the Parliament of the purple formation.
Andrés Barreto emphasizes that Lanzarote needs a project similar to the one created in 2003, with Alternativa Cuidadana. "You have to do what we did in its day, and everyone who has something to say sits at a table and says it, without further ado. We would have to repeat the process, which was very nice, of pure and hard assembly", adds Barreto, who even assures that he "would be there to lend a hand to the extent of his possibilities".
