The Lanzarote Tourist Business Federation, Aetur, has assessed the cable ski project in the La Santa lagoon and considers that these facilities "are not in accordance" with the characteristics of the area, nor with the type of activities and tourist facilities that are developed in this place, "characterized by healthy and sports tourism, far removed at all times from the so-called mass tourism." Although it "praises" the business initiative, it considers that the lagoon "is not the most appropriate place" to install the cable ski.
Aetur believes that the environmental and visual impact produced by these facilities would be "excessive", "causing a degradation of the vision of the area", which is characterized by "the absence of large constructions and consisting basically of small buildings of low height." And this project foresees the installation of a tower of about 10 meters and several of between 4 and 6 meters of height. "This implies the creation of important visual distortions in the landscape of the La Santa lagoon," says Aetur.
The Lanzarote Tourist Business Federation also points out that the introduction of this activity "could imply the modification of the typology of the usual tourist user" in La Santa and especially of the lagoon user. Aetur considers that this type of cable ski infrastructure is designed for "places with large concentrations of tourist visitors or areas of mass tourism, totally contrary to the usual tourist user of the area."
"Really complicated" to make different sports compatible
Thus, it recalls that, according to the project presented in the Demarcación de Costas de Canarias, it is planned to occupy 736 square meters of the water surface of the La Santa lagoon in order to carry out this sports modality. For Aetur, it would be necessary to determine "large security zones" for the users of these cable ski facilities and for the rest of the users, who usually develop in said lagoon.
The problem is that Aetur considers "really complicated" the compatibility of this sports activity with the rest that are practiced in the lagoon. Therefore, it warns that "a cornering or discrimination of users of minor leisure activities, which do not need large infrastructures, in favor of users of nautical cable skiing" may occur.
