The Biosphere Reserve Office of the Cabildo of Lanzarote carried out a total of 490 actions throughout the school year that has just ended, targeting 15,000 Primary and Secondary Education students on the island.
“A total of 261 workshops and 152 talks were given, in addition to organizing 25 outings to take microplastic samples and other activities within the action plans of the 13 unitary schools participating in the Biosphere Schools project,” details the Councilor for the Biosphere Reserve, Elena Solís.
From the Cabildo they explain that through the workshops “Living in a Biosphere Reserve”, the students were able to receive information "about the declaration of the island as a Biosphere Reserve, as well as about the commitments acquired before UNESCO and about how to contribute to creating a society in which development and conservation are compatible."
Likewise, Infant and Primary school children enjoyed ecological awareness workshops "based on biocentric education, in which biodanza is used as a tool for the acquisition of values and attitudes such as empathy towards others and towards nature, cooperation and understanding of dependence and interdependence, all putting life at the center."
The Lanzarote Biosphere Reserve Office also gave workshops on the Sustainable Development Goals in schools, as well as the “Littering, the footprint of ignorance” Workshop, organized in order to give visibility to the garbage that exists in the environment with the aim that students are aware of its existence and that it should not be in the middle of nature.
On the other hand, from the Corporation they point out that a program of talks focused on all courses and focused on aspects such as "the importance of the landscape, the pollution of the environment by plastics and microplastics and marine biodiversity, among other topics" was carried out.
In addition, 25 trips to Famara beach were organized to take microplastic samples with students in order to count the microplastic accumulated in various areas of the beach and thereby give visibility to this global problem.
To all this, we must add the loan of exhibitions on various topics to educational centers and the delivery of materials such as informative postcards with diverse themes.
