The Traumatology and Orthopedics service of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital has increased its activity by 55% from January to October 2022, compared to the same period of the previous year. Specifically, during these ten months a total of 16,167 consultations have been attended in the service compared to the 10,433 that were registered during 2021.
The team of this service is made up of 11 specialists and another two assistants who attend outpatient consultations in Primary Care, in addition, the incorporation of a new doctor is scheduled for next December 5.
7,462 New consultations
Of the number of consultations carried out throughout this year, 7,462 correspond to first consultations and 8,705 are subsequent consultations. The main reasons for the consultations are related to back pain, neck pain and lower back pain, as well as knee and hip pathologies.
Likewise, throughout these months there has been a growth of just over 10 percent in the number of surgical interventions performed by the traumatology service, compared to the 888 operations performed during the previous year, in the current year 987 interventions have been carried out, of which 773 were scheduled and 115 were carried out as an emergency.
Most of these interventions are due to bone fractures, hip and knee prostheses, while the most common within major outpatient surgery, and therefore does not require hospital admission, are shoulder and knee arthroscopy.
On the other hand, it should be noted that admissions to the ward of traumatology of the hospital center have amounted to a total of 826 compared to the 728 registered in the same period of the previous year, with an average stay per patient of 4.92 days.
Accredited to train resident doctors
The Traumatology Service of Molina Orosa is training, for the first time this year, resident internal doctors (MIR) after having received accreditation from the Ministry of Health. In this regard, the head of the service, Irene Jiménez Pina, points out that "the accreditation for the training of residents is a challenge for the team and an advance for the Hospital, because it requires the doctors to supervise and make the effort to implement areas such as research and teaching through publications, presentations and inclusion in research works that sometimes, in hospitals of our level, are relegated to the background due to daily clinical practice and care work".
