The waiting list for medical specialties in Lanzarote increases by 36% in the first half of the year

A total of 2,024 residents on the island were waiting for a consultation between January and June, compared to 1,488 in the last six months of 2021

Waiting lists to access a medical specialist in Lanzarote have increased by 36% in the first half of the year compared to the last six months of 2021, according to data released by the Canary Islands Health Service.

Specifically, a total of 2,024 residents on the island were waiting for a consultation between January and June, compared to 1,488 in the last six months of 2021. In addition, this year's figure is the highest since June 2019, when a total waiting list of 2,950 people was recorded.

The list is headed, as usual, by the area of Traumatology and surgery, with a total of 357 people in the first half of the year. It should be noted that this figure is 51% higher than in the second half of the previous year, when there were 235 people. In addition, this specialty has been suffering increases in the number of people waiting since June 2020, since in that month there were 188 people waiting.

The specialty of Rehabilitation is the second with the highest number of people waiting in the first half of the year, with a total of 238 people, followed by Urology with 125 people, and Dermatology with 123. These three areas also show a higher number of people compared to the last semester of 2021.

Gynecology, Otorhinolaryngology, Rheumatology, and Endocrinology are the following specialties in the ranking of people on the waiting list at the Molina Orosa Hospital, a list that is closed by the area of Nephrology, with only one person waiting in the first half of the year.

 

More than half a thousand people are waiting for an operation

Specifically, a total of 508 people were waiting for a surgical intervention in the area of Traumatology and Orthopedic Surgery between January and June, and 140 of them with a wait of more than six months. In addition, the average delay in this area is 128.28 days.

A total of 431 people were waiting to undergo surgery in the Ophthalmology service, with an average delay of 73 days, and according to SCS data, there are 288 people on the waiting list for an operation in General and Digestive Surgery, which this area has an average delay of 49.79 days.

The surgical service of the Urology area has a total of 191 people waiting in the first half of the year, with an average delay of 59.54 days, while the Gynecology area has a total of 75 people registered waiting, with a delay of 48.05 days. Vascular Angiology, Otorhinolaryngology, and Dermatology are the last areas in this ranking of waiting lists between January and June of this year 2022.

In total, according to data from the Canary Islands Health Service, a total of 1,598 people were waiting for a surgical intervention according to data from the first semester, a figure relatively similar to that of 2021, when there were 1,515 people.

 

A simple ultrasound, the test with the highest number of people waiting

The Canary Islands Health Service has also detailed the list in Lanzarote of people who are waiting for a complementary test at the Molina Orosa Hospital.

A total of 163 people were waiting for a simple ultrasound in Lanzarote, with an average delay of 122.69 days on the island, a figure similar to the average waiting time in the archipelago. After this test is the list to receive a magnetic resonance, with a total of 84 people waiting between January and June, and the waiting list to have a CT scan, of 29 people.

Mammograms, endoscopies, electrocardiograms and ergometries are the other complementary tests that also register people waiting in the first half of the year.

In the global count, the SCS reflects that there were a total of 325 people waiting to receive a complementary test in Lanzarote in the first six months, five more than in the first half of 2021, with an average delay of 50.45 days
