Citizen Alternative 25 de Mayo (AC-25M) has once again denounced that on Christmas Day there were new spills on the sand of Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen, right next to the Aparthotel Fariones.

According to the political formation in a statement, the first of these occurred throughout the morning. For approximately three hours, sewage invaded the beach until the problem was resolved.

The affected area was fenced off, occupying a much larger area than the part flooded by the spill on Monday, December 12 in the same place.

A few hours later, around half past one in the afternoon, a new breakdown was detected. This time in the pumping station itself. The water cascaded towards the beach. Thanks to the intervention of the members of Citizen Alternative, Aguas Filtradas was notified, whose personnel acted by stopping the spill.

The appearance of the beach is "lamentable" in the words of the municipal representatives of AC-25M. Runoff of sewage in the planters and puddles of dirty water on the beach. Muddy areas where there was plenty of sand and pigeons eating shit. "Foreigners staring in amazement, recording and photographing something unheard of," the letter states.

Beyond that, in Los Pocillos, more of the same. On the 26th, it was found that the puddles that anyone can observe and that surely have rainwater, are also composed of sewage. "Just throw a stone to detect the smell that is released," they say.

Proposals

In the opinion of the Municipal Group of AC-25M in the Tías City Council, it is necessary to channel rainwater separately from sewage, but that does not solve the continuous spills throughout the year.

Immediate measures must be taken such as cleaning the sewage network that, as a result of the rains, contains all kinds of large debris that block the pumping stations and paralyze the sanitation; an education and awareness campaign that guarantees the effective removal of oils from the restaurant sector, in order to prevent them from being discharged into the sewage system, causing the formation of fat pastes that clog and obstruct the sanitation like cholesterol and arteries; and of course, an action protocol that minimizes the impact that continuous spills are generating on our beaches and tourism.

The members of Alternativa are committed, in the long term, to achieving actions in infrastructures that renew and update the sewage network of Puerto del Carmen, which "has become obsolete in the face of the urban growth it has to face".

For AC-25M, "we must ensure that the water reaches the treatment plant and that investment of 1,800,000 euros is effective and useful".

For the time being, they add, "we have managed to ensure that every time there is a spill, at least, they fence off the affected area." However, that is the least they should do. "The negligence of those who govern us is desperate," the note concludes.
