PIL flies the seven green stars to celebrate Canary Islands National Flag Day

The Day of the Canarian National Flag brought together PIL militants in a "flag-raising ceremony" that took place on Wednesday morning at the Guanapay Castle, in Teguise, where a flag four meters long and two meters wide flew "in the presence of several PIL and Canarian Coalition militants and supporters", according to the independent Lanzarote party.

During the event, the current president of the PIL, Antonio Barambio, gave a speech where he explained the values of the tricolor flag and the identification of Canarian citizens with the seven-star flag. "This flag was presented 44 years ago with the idea of representing all the inhabitants of the Canary Islands", declared Barambio, who emphasized the festive nature of the event, far from "claims" and simply focused on the celebration of the symbol that, although it is not the official one, they consider that it identifies the Islands and that "Canarians use to identify themselves in their various manifestations".

For his part, the mayor of Teguise, José Dimas Martín, stressed that the flag is "of the Canarian people" and that "there is a demand for it to be finally recognized as official, with its seven stars, in the statute of the autonomous community". A statute that is already in the process of being reformed and in which "the Canarian Coalition should advocate for the recognition of the flag that represents all Canarians", according to Martín. The mayor also regretted that "not as many residents attended as in other years" due to the working day on which this particular flag-raising ceremony was held.
