The CEIP Muñique, a unitary school with 9 students, has obtained the title of 'Reciclón of the Year 2016' in recognition of the school recycling program developed throughout the current year. The Cabildo has awarded the prize to this center "especially for the involvement of students, teachers and staff of the center in the system of separation and recycling of waste".
It was the Minister of the area, Echedey Eugenio, who presented the award last Monday, on the occasion of the celebration on June 5 of World Environment Day. This is an award given by the Cabildo of Lanzarote through the program 'Play Clean with your School', included in the Lanzarote Recicla campaign. The IES Puerto del Carmen won the second prize and the CEIP Ajei of San Bartolomé, the third.
During the ceremony, the Minister highlighted "the active participation of the educational community both in recycling tasks and in the different activities and campaigns in which they have taken part through this program in which more than 20,000 students from 62 educational centers on the island have participated".
Eugenio congratulated the winning students for "showing their awareness of the importance of recycling, which they learn so quickly and which we adults sometimes lack" and stressed that, thanks to initiatives of this type, "recycling is being established as a normal habit in schools".
Likewise, the Minister highlighted the increase both in the quality of waste separation and in the adequacy of the infrastructure of the centers, which has made it possible to increase by almost 95% compared to last year the waste collected through the yellow containers, up to 20,929 kilos, and by 67% those of the blue containers, collecting 28,780 kilos.
A dynamization program
'Play Clean with your School' has had a dynamization program, through which 100 new blue and yellow containers with a capacity of 120 liters have been distributed among the participating centers, which also received a 'recycling kit' at the beginning of the course with informative material aimed at spreading the values of the well-known '3Rs', which are those of reducing, reusing and recycling, as well as specific material for each student of infant and primary education based on the children's mascots of the project.
The development of the program was based on the participation of the educational community of each center in the separation of plastic, cans and brick waste, deposited in the yellow containers, and paper and cardboard (blue containers). The waste was collected and transferred for classification and shipment to recycling plants by the company holding the selective collection concession on the island, the UTE Lanzarote Selectiva.
In addition, support activities have been developed throughout the year through the 'Recíclame' program, through which environmental education activities called 'Recielectro', 'A reciclar' and 'Reci-Team' were carried out; the solidarity recycling campaigns 'Solidarity Caps', 'Your used mobile gives us strength' and 'Solidarity shoes'; and the school contest 'Recycling is easy, are you in?', which consisted of the categories 'A recycled Christmas', 'Creating from waste' and 'Get your batteries'.
The award ceremony of the first prize 'Reciclón of the year', held on Monday at the CEIP Muñique, was also attended by the island director of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands, Mario Pérez. This Tuesday the students of the IES Puerto del Carmen and the CEIP Ajei of San Bartolomé also received the awards as second and third classified.
