The University Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa, a center attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, received this Tuesday a "cradle of hugs" from the Charter 100 Canarias Lanzarote y La Graciosa Association. The delivery ceremony coincided with the commemoration of the World Day of gestational, perinatal and neonatal death, which takes place on October 15.
The cradle of hugs or cuddle cot is a carrycot-type cradle with a thermal device, which allows mothers, fathers and other family members to stay with their deceased baby for as long as they need and can say goodbye without haste and begin the process of their perinatal grief in an intimate and quiet space.
The delivery ceremony was attended by the manager of the Lanzarote Health Services, Pablo Eguia, the medical subdirector of the Management, María José Guardia, the heads of the gestational grief working group and the president of Charter 100 Lanzarote y La Graciosa, Verónica González.
The donation by Charter 100 Canarias in Lanzarote y La Graciosa comes after the initiative of this association to organize different recreational and educational activities whose proceeds have been entirely allocated to the acquisition of this cradle of hugs.
Perinatal Grief Care
The Molina Orosa Hospital has a protocol for perinatal grief care that includes humanized and respectful clinical care for the family's grief. Within the framework of this protocol, a space is prepared for the family to say goodbye to their baby, and the use of the memory box is implemented, which tries to collect memories and objects such as the bracelet, hat or footprint card of the baby and some photographs.
The heads of the gestational and neonatal grief working group appreciate the initiative of Charter 100 Canarias, which has a positive impact on the care of families facing grief for their babies, because from now on they will have more time to stay with them and be able to remember them.
