The Management of Sanitary Services of the Lanzarote Health Area and the Acompañar Social Action Association have signed a collaboration protocol to promote the process of accompanying patients and families in cases of serious illness, death and during mourning.

The manager of the Lanzarote Health Services, José Luis Aparicio, and the president of the association, Sergio García, signed this protocol this morning at the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital, through which comprehensive accompaniment to the patient with serious illness or in the final phase of life is favored, attending to their needs, both in the hospital and in home hospitalization.

Through this protocol, the Acompañar Association undertakes, in addition to accompanying the patient and family during the serious illness process, to provide them with the care and assistance necessary to make this process as inclusive as possible and thus guarantee a dignified death.

The president of the Association, Sergio García, assured that it is about "humanizing the process of death, in such a way that our action, with respect to care, is up to the person's demand, defined by their dignity." The association, García assures, "tries to be a link between the patient and the family itself, promoting communication between them and a serene approach to death." Likewise, the protocol establishes cooperation with the health team and the professionals involved in the process.

The association will participate in the hospital process of patients, always with prior consent, with musical accompaniment in the different spaces such as in the Pediatrics service, with music therapy sessions in coordination with the tutor of the Hospital classroom. Or, on the other hand, with interventions in the Oncohematological Day Hospital, where different artists from the formation traditionally participate.

The Management of the Lanzarote Health Area understands that this protocol "results in the humanization of health care for patients." José Luis Aparicio, in addition, "values and appreciates the work that the members of the association have carried out for years and their collaboration with the hospital's medical services, which this protocol now includes and formalizes." For its part, the Management undertakes to make it known among all the professionals attached to the Health Area and to disseminate it among patients and family members who suffer from a serious illness, are in the final phase of life or in a grieving process.
