The IES Las Salinas of Arrecife has been recognized by Unicef as a Reference Center in Education in Children's Rights and Global Citizenship, for its commitment to incorporating this vision into its educational project, a distinction that the IES San Benito of Tenerife has also received.
These two centers of the archipelago are part of the 109 Spanish educational centers from different autonomous communities that have this recognition, in its level 1. This distinction, which has been granted since 2017, is part of the collaboration of Unicef Spanish Committee with the different Education Councils to promote education in children's rights, as established by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the international treaty of the General Assembly of the United Nations that recognizes the basic human rights of children and adolescents.
In the third edition of the call, which has just been resolved, 91 educational centers from 16 autonomous communities have been recognized, among which are these two Canarian institutes. The purpose of this initiative is to promote and recognize the effort of these educational centers to carry out global citizenship projects in the long term and encourage them to continuously improve and innovate in Education in Children's Rights.
Since 2017, Unicef Spanish Committee grants recognition to those centers that have shown their commitment to incorporating a vision of Education in Children's Rights and Global Citizenship in their educational project. The call for recognitions is annual and is open to all centers of Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary Education, whether public, private or subsidized, recognized as official by the Education Council and/or the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports. As a novelty this year, 22 recognized centers participate in a pilot program to obtain level 2 recognition.
