The well-known and popular carnival-goer Pepe García presented his exhibition "Memories of the Recova" on Wednesday night at the Sociedad Democracia. With this exhibition, you can delve into the first food market in Lanzarote, which disappeared to build the new Arrecife City Hall.
Pepe García, in his eagerness to maintain the traditions and culture of the island, focused on this exhibition, managing to turn the hall of the Sociedad Democracia into an authentic market. In this way, he managed to make citizens long for the old Recova, and neighbors who did not have the opportunity to know it can take a look at the market through this exhibition.
Thus, the new generations will get an idea of what was the commercial center of Arrecife and Lanzarote, where women for the most part, although also some men, arriving from San Bartolomé, Montaña Blanca, Güime or Tinajo, sold their products.
Now, on the walls of the Sociedad Democracia hang more than forty photos, which have been provided by the family of the recently deceased Domingo Brito Fajardo, who was a resident of San Bartolomé. This man left a very valuable cultural heritage. But not only the history of this Recova hangs on the walls, but in the center of the room there is a counter full of fruits, small balayos, a varied collection of legumes, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, potatoes, thyme, rosemary, grapes or milk fruit. In addition, you can also see the weights and scales that they used at the time and that are now obsolete.
The opening ceremony, which took place this Wednesday night, was very crowded. Among the public was the entire family of Domingo Brito, such as his widow, children and grandchildren. In addition, the president of the Sociedad Democracia, Ginés Hernández, as well as the deputy mayor of Arrecife, José Montelongo, the Councilor for Culture, Eva de Anta, the Councilor for Social Services, Carmen Sáez, and the Councilor for Human Resources, Nayra Callero, also attended.
The exhibition will remain open until September 4.
