Salvamar rescued this Sunday, January 1, 81 men of Maghrebi origin who were sailing in a pneumatic boat and a pateras in the vicinity of Lanzarote, an island where it has disembarked a first expedition made up of 36 people and which it plans to arrive at around 11:00 a.m. with another 45. The third pateras arrived on the island on December 30 and 42 people were traveling on it, according to CECOES.

This has been confirmed to EFE by sources from the state company, who have detailed that the Las Palmas center was alerted at around 03:00 hours that a pateras was sailing near Lanzarote, so a search device was activated by Helimer 205 and the Guardamar Calíope and the ships in the area were also informed to collaborate in locating the boat.

That is how, at around 05:00 hours, the Helimer 205 spotted a pneumatic boat in a different position than previously obtained, so the Salvamar Al Nair was mobilized, whose crew managed to rescue about 06:40 hours to 36 people who were on board, all Maghrebi men in apparently good health, who were disembarked 40 minutes later at the Commercial dock of the capital of Lanzarote.

While this rescue was taking place, the Maritime Rescue center in Las Palmas continued to receive intermittent communication, with contradictory positions, from the initial pateras that the Guardamar Calíope was still searching for.

Therefore, once the Helimer 205 helicopter had exhausted its autonomy, the Sasemar 103 plane was mobilized for this search.

However, when this relief was taking place, the SIVE detected an echo that the Guardamar Calíope went to check, which at about 09:20 hours was able to rescue 45 people who were on board a pateras, all Maghrebi men.

Arrival of a pateras on December 30

As for the third pateras, it was located in waters near Lanzarote on the night of December 30 and was later transferred to the Arrecife Dock.

According to CECOES, 42 migrants were traveling on the boat. After being attended by a device from the Canary Emergency Service, it was assessed that all the people were in good general condition.
