This July 31 marked 200 years since one of the last volcanic eruptions in Lanzarote. The Tao - Tiagua volcano, also known as the Volcán del Clérigo Duarte or Montaña Negra. For this reason, and in compliance with the promise, at 7:00 p.m., at the souk of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows, in Mancha Blanca, the Eucharist was celebrated.
On this occasion, it was presided over by the auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of the Canary Islands, Monsignor Cristóbal Déniz, assisted by the parish priest of Tinajo and San Bartolomé, Francisco José García, Rafael Tejera, parish priest of Tiagua, Magí Pibernat, chaplain in Madrid and Adrián Sosa, parish priest of Tías.
The Homily was preached by the auxiliary bishop Cristóbal, basing it on the events that occurred in 1824, when the inhabitants of Tao, Tiagua and nearby towns went with the image of the Virgin of Sorrows to stop the volcano and to prevent what happened in the previous volcanic eruptions of Timanfaya from happening again.
Currently there are other volcanoes erupting in society and with which we must fight to ensure that wars, emigration and inequalities between men and women end.
The bishop also recalled that the celebration of the Eucharist on this July 31 was the beginning of the events that will be held in Lanzarote on the occasion of the Descent of Our Lady of Sorrows to Arrecife on November 30.
Once the Eucharist was finished, the procession was started, touring the sides of the Sanctuary minutes before the image passed through the portico of the Sanctuary. The image was dismissed with cheers and applause, thus fulfilling the promise that the men and women of Tao, Tiagua and neighboring towns made on July 31, 1824.
