The Cabildo and Ecovidrio presented this Thursday the first "accessible" glass containers, which will be installed throughout the Canary Islands. The six containers that will be initially placed in Lanzarote have a mid-height opening so that people with disabilities or the elderly, among other potential users, can deposit the waste.

This was explained by the president of the Cabildo and head of Waste, Pedro San Ginés, and the manager of Ecovidrio in the Canary Islands, Jorge Lorenzo Peña Peraza, in the presentation of these containers, which was also attended by the Minister of Social Welfare, Marciano Acuña, and the president of the Disgrup Foundation, Guillermo Egido, who, due to his presence on the island, wanted to know first-hand how these new deposits work.

San Ginés has detailed that these accessible containers from the Ecovidrio entity will be installed in several strategic points located in tourist establishments on the island that are currently "adapted" to 100 percent, such as the Sand Beach Hotel in Costa Teguise, the Nautilus in Puerto del Carmen and La Santa Sport, which throughout the year welcome a large public and potential users of these containers. "We wanted to reward these tourist establishments and contribute to the effort they have made in terms of accessibility," said the president.

The Lanzarote Disability Care Center, managed by Adislan, will also have one of these first accessible glass containers, joining the adapted selective containers (for packaging, paper and cardboard) that were already located in these same facilities and among other points and educational centers in Lanzarote in recent months.

Similarly, the Cabildo will use one of these six accessible glass containers in a traveling manner, installing it in all sporting and cultural events organized by the Institution. The manager of Ecovidrio in the Canary Islands has assured that, according to the needs and demands that arise regarding the location of this type of special containers, it is planned to distribute them in other areas of the island. Jorge Lorenzo Peña has also made a call to other councils and institutions of the Canary Islands to also request these first accessible glass containers from Ecovidrio.

"A false myth"

Taking advantage of this presentation, San Ginés assured that it is "a false myth that what is separated at home is buried in the Zonzamas landfill cells." According to him, "the packaging, cans, brik, cardboard and paper, and glass that the population deposits in the yellow, blue and green containers, respectively, is classified and leaves the island, which contributes to it not being deposited in the controlled waste landfill, thus reducing its use, and avoiding the consequent pollution to the environment."

The Cabildo de Lanzarote has 648 packaging containers (yellow), 589 paper and cardboard containers (blue) and 917 glass containers (green), "being in all municipalities well above the established ratios", according to the president.
