Lanzarote celebrates Constitution Day in Teguise

The town of Teguise hosted the solemn commemoration of Constitution Day on Tuesday morning. All the mayors of the Island attended the event held in the Plaza Miguel Arcángel de Teguise, with the exception of María Isabel Déniz, who is traveling and was replaced by the Councilor for Public Works of Arrecife, Luis Morales. In addition, the insular director of the State, Miguel Martín, the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Inés Rojas de León, the commissioner of the National Police of Arrecife, Raimundo Villanueva, as well as other civil and military dignitaries, attended the event.

To the sound of the Spanish anthem played by the Yaiza Municipal Band, soldiers from the three armies, as well as a member of the Civil Guard, raised the flag at around twelve noon, which marked the beginning of the event. Immediately afterwards, Air Force troops fired into the air to commemorate such a significant date for all Spaniards.

Recognition plaques

As has become a tradition, both the City Council on duty, Teguise on this occasion, and the insular Directorate of the State presented commemorative plaques to two collectives from Lanzarote who throughout the year stood out for their work on the island of Lanzarote.

On behalf of the Villa, the Rancho de Pascuas de Teguise was awarded. The history of this Rancho is long and very interesting. According to the historian Francisco Hernández Delgado, in 1417 the Order of San Francisco founded a small oratory in Famara. A few years later, the Villa de Teguise became the religious, military and political center of the Island. The Ranchos de Ánimas gained importance from 1850, when the convent of Santa María de Miraflores was founded by the Franciscan Order. These toured the town of Teguise asking from door to door to raise funds for the souls.

In the 20th century, Agustín de la Hoz wrote the following about the Rancho: "The Christmas Rancho is the holy ark of Christianity in Lanzarote, one of its first expressions and the starting point of all the religious history of the island after Bishop Rubicense".

For its part, the insular Directorate awarded the plaque to the Association of Disabled People of Lanzarote (ADISLAN), which in 2001 was declared of public utility by the Ministry of the Interior, being the first insular association to receive this distinction.

Interventions

At the end of the presentation of plaques, Inés Rojas de León, Marcial Martín, insular director of the General State Administration; and the mayor of Teguise, Juan Pedro Hernández, gave a few words to commemorate the 27 years of the Magna Carta.

In the heat of the debate currently present in all spheres of society regarding the convenience or not of giving life to the reforms proposed by the Government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, Marcial Martín pointed out that "the Constitution is not a static norm, because it cannot be, neither in its contents, nor in its precepts. Everything evolves, immobility is not possible, because behind this concept is the exhaustion and subsequent deterioration of the system. That is why, if it is considered that the time has come for its reform, then let it be undertaken, but let it be done with the agreement and consensus of all, because that is the secret of its greatness and that is the formula for its continuity".

The act concluded with the floral offering to the Constitution and the interpretation of the Spanish National Anthem.
