Gastroenteritis is a very common ailment among the people of Lanzarote. Every day in consultation, two or three people appear in medical consultations in Lanzarote complaining of stomach pains, diarrhea and vomiting, for having eaten something in poor condition or due to stomach cold conditions.

Doctor Fernando Jiménez García explained to LA VOZ readers the symptoms associated with this type of condition. "Gastroenteritis is a viral condition, sometimes infectious, which is mainly diagnosed by vomiting and diarrhea.

But not only food in poor condition can cause stomach poisoning, which is how gastroenteritis is commonly known. "Also eating very fast and too copious dinners, some snacking that can feel bad", all these are possible causes of gastroenteritis.

Jiménez explained the instructions that should be followed when suffering from poisoning. Generally, it is advised "not to take solid foods during the first 16 hours in the case of children, and during the first day in adults".

"You should take liquid foods. There are oral serums in pharmacies, isotonic drinks for rehydration". In fact, "rehydration is the most important thing after diarrhea".

24 hours on a diet

The ideal is to go on a diet for the first 24 hours. This can be done either with serum, or with what is called "an alkaline lemonade, which is a liter of unboiled water, to which the juice of two or three lemons, half a spoonful of bicarbonate of soda, a little salt and two or three spoonfuls of sugar are added".

However, what Dr. Jiménez recommends is to resort to pharmacy serums, "because they already have the prepared composition, and they are serums that are mixed with water". It is advisable to supply the serum "in small doses until the patient has less than three or four bowel movements a day".

From that moment on, the foods that are advised are broths, soups, mashed potatoes with carrots, boiled egg, white fish, "and in third place would be chicken or turkey meat, but grilled, without skin". Finally, "grated apple with a few drops of lemon". Infusions also help to recover the good condition of the stomach.

Back pain

With the change in ambient temperature due to the arrival of winter, many are those who complain of back pain in the lumbar area. Jiménez García explained that "we complain especially when there are changes in the weather and when we have done some activity".

"The back is an important axis on which our body sits, and if we saturate it, we do not remain upright, then it will be the first thing to complain", Jiménez pointed out.

"Lower back pain is much more frequent, because we spend a lot of time sitting, we do not do the exercise we should, and that is why we always complain of back pain".

There are several simple tricks to avoid these discomforts. "When we are still, we must frequently change posture, do simple exercises, take periodic breaks".

While "standing, avoid hunched postures, have enough space to place the feet, have a footrest for the muscles of the feet to rest. You should also have your arms supported as much as possible, because it turns out that when the arms are supported, the back rests".
