The famous writer Eduardo Mendoza, one of the most unique contemporary writers in the national scene, will visit Lanzarote next Thursday to attend the "The Author and His Work" event, organized by the César Manrique Foundation and which will take place at 8:30 p.m. at the headquarters located in Taro de Tahíche.
These meetings have already included the presence of authors of the stature of José Saramago, Alberto Campo Baeza, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Carmen Martín Gaite, José Ángel Valente, Susan Sontag, Juan Goytisolo, Eduardo Haro Tecglen, Eduardo Galeano or Nobel Prize winner Günter Grass, among others.
Genius and author
Eduardo Mendoza was born in 1943 in Barcelona, where he completed all his studies. After graduating in Law, he studied sociology in London and worked as a lawyer in several companies and later as a translator and interpreter at the United Nations and various international organizations.
In 1975 he published his first novel, The Truth About the Savolta Case, with the Seix Barral publishing house, to which he has remained faithful to this day. Other novels of his are: The Mystery of the Bewitched Crypt, The City of Prodigies, No Word from Gurb and A Light Comedy, up to the most recent, The Amazing Journey of Pomponio Flato, which appeared this year. He has also written plays, in Catalan, and has made translations into Spanish and Catalan.
Since 1988, he has dedicated himself exclusively to literature, except for a period in which he taught interpretation at the Pompeu i Fabra University of Barcelona, and has also made several collaborations as a columnist in the newspaper El País.
During his speech, Eduardo Mendoza will explore the keys to his work. In his own words, "at this point, when I am asked which author has most influenced my work, I am obliged to answer that myself. Each book is the son of the previous one and the father of the next, without lacking in this evolution the adaptations to the environment and the Mendelian jumps".
According to the author, "without going into a detailed analysis of each book, which would be tedious and ineffective, because this task corresponds to the critic and, with more right, to each reader, I will review my successive projects and achievements, without overlooking failures and derailments, with some reflections on the sidelines".
