The tourist town of Playa Blanca celebrated World Oceans Day last Saturday with a cleaning of the beach and seabed of Flamingo beach, thanks to the collaboration of thirty volunteers. The initiative was organized by Pura Vida and Kayak Lanzarote, who before the pandemic were already carrying out monthly cleaning days in different points of the coast of southern Lanzarote together with the Yaiza City Council.

The mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, has thanked all the people and collaborating entities on behalf of the institution "because this initiative is a great practical message of awareness and citizen awareness."

The Councilor for the Environment of Yaiza, Águeda Cedrés, who participated in the action alongside children and adults, highlights that "there is still garbage, especially plastic, cigarette butts and cans, both in the surroundings of the beach and in the bottom of the sea, but this time we did notice a smaller volume of waste." "It is clear that the sea has taken a break with the forced absence of everyone", he stressed.

Looking ahead to the summer season, the Yaiza City Council has taken advantage of this campaign to ask bathers and sailors to refrain from throwing waste on the sand or into the sea. In addition, it has reiterated to users of beaches with stones, such as Las Coloradas beach, that they should avoid accumulating them or drawing names or figures with them, "due to the damage to the ecosystem caused by this apparently harmless practice."
