A total of 180 young people, between 14 and 30 years old, have submitted 286 works to the Macaronesian Competition for Young Artists. This is an initiative promoted by the Island Youth Service of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, which is part of the Atlantic Digital Art Project (PAAD), co-financed by the INTERREG III B program of the European Union.
The contest, which was presented in Madeira, Azores and Cape Verde, as well as on the islands of Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, La Palma and Tenerife, has been excellently received in the Canary Islands, from where 91 artists presented their works. 36 have been presented from the Azores, while Madeira and Cape Verde have presented 31 and 22 respectively. In this sense, the Councilor for Youth and Sports of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Francisca Toledo, commented that "it is impressive to see the unity of the young people of Macaronesia through this cultural event".
On July 26, the jury's decision will be made public for the works in the areas of plastic arts, music and audiovisual. Likewise, it will be in the month of September when the winning works in the area of humanities are known. It should be remembered that more than 30,000 euros have been established in cash prizes, in addition to others consisting of meetings between the winners of the four regions.
The contest
The Macaronesian Contest has the modalities of music, humanities, audiovisual and plastic arts. In this way, each contestant has been able to submit a maximum of three works for each of the types. The participating groups have sent a demo, in DAT, or audio CD, recently recorded disc or video, with the highest possible quality and four musical themes. The presented demos are original and unpublished, being admitted in any language and within any of the styles and variations of pop and rock, as well as electronic music. As for folk music, the modality contains two sections. On the one hand, groups and on the other, soloists in timple.
In humanities, a short story or poetry could be presented. In both it was for the junior and senior categories with works in Spanish or Portuguese and of different lengths depending on the modality. As for the audiovisual area, the participants have been able to present short fiction films, documentaries and video creations. Finally, in plastic arts, comics, photographs, graphic design works and sculptures have been presented.
