The Tías City Council hosted this Tuesday morning the presentation of the different events that will be held this Thursday, March 17, on the occasion of the feast of St. Patrick's Day, patron saint of Ireland. The color green will invade the streets of Puerto del Carmen once again this year, where concerts and the traditional parade in honor of Saint Patrick will be held.

The Councilor for Tourism, Amado Vizcaíno, explained during the presentation that "the program will start this Thursday, the 17th, from 11:20 in the morning with the mass in honor of St. Patrick in the church of Puerto del Carmen and then the concerts with live music will begin." He explained that "up to eleven groups will play, all Irish, except for one local group, until 9 pm, the scheduled end time of the event."

Parallel to these events, there will also be a parade starting at 5 pm, which will depart from the Biosfera Shopping Center to the Plaza del Varadero. Vizcaíno also pointed out that "during this Thursday, Roque Nublo street, where a large number of Irish businesses are concentrated, will be closed to traffic, as there will also be music in the street." "This is a different day, where tourists and residents have an opportunity to share with the Irish their big party, as well as their music and typical gastronomy."

Puerto del Carmen, a favorite destination for the Irish

The presentation was attended by the Mayor of Tías, Pancho Hernández, the First Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Tourism, Amado Vizcaíno, and the Honorary Consul of Ireland in Lanzarote, Eileen Izquierdo Taylor, who explained that the country of the shamrock is one of the main sources of tourism to the island. In fact, more than 200,000 Irish tourists travel to Lanzarote every year to enjoy their vacations, with Puerto del Carmen being the preferred destination for the vast majority of them.

"Precisely, Lanzarote has once again received this year, for the thirteenth consecutive time, the Best Winter Sun Destination 2016 award, granted by the Irish Travel Industry (ITI) as the Best Sun Destination in the winter season for the Irish," said Eileen Izquierdo.

The Honorary Consul pointed out that "Puerto del Carmen is the preferred destination for the Irish, but also for the President of the country, Michael Daniel Higgins, who recently spent a few days of rest in the town enjoying its beaches, the good climate, the tranquility, its walks, the gastronomy or its wide range of leisure activities."

Mayor Pancho Hernández stressed "the significant number of Irish people who reside or have their businesses in Puerto del Carmen, so the celebration of Saint Patrick's has become a major event of interest, where in recent years it has had a great success of participation with more than 5,000 people."

Both the Councilor for Tourism and the Mayor have thanked the Irish for their "loyalty" to Puerto del Carmen and have encouraged everyone to participate and enjoy the tradition of the St. Patrick's Day festivities in the Varadero, "being Irish for a day and having a truly unforgettable day."
