The sand slide at the bottom of Playa Chica, a most normal phenomenon

Jacinto Méndez, an experienced diver who knows the area, explains that this is a "normal and usual" phenomenon to which no major importance should be given.

On July 8, authorities closed Playa Chica, in Puerto del Carmen, due to the detachment of a marine platform. After what happened, some people reported "a 15-meter hole" that had opened on the seabed.

However, what happened was a displacement of the sand itself, which is something usual. Jacinto Méndez, an experienced diver who knows this area very well, decided to take a look at the beach to observe what had happened. "What I saw is what I have seen since I have been diving, a natural movement of the sand motivated by marine currents," says Méndez.

And these natural events are not dangerous for people, only that there is a greater depth in the affected area. In addition, the diver says that the seabed changes over the years. "Seven years ago, in Playa Chica there were two stones that stood out where seahorses could be seen, but they are currently covered by sand," he explains.

In one of the videos that he was able to record during the dive, you can see an anchor "that was buried and that I got to see about 12 years ago," he declares. On the other hand, you can also see the shell of a scallop embedded in a stone. "This is proof that this was discovered years ago but was hidden under the sand with the currents and after the landslide, it has come to light again," clarifies Méndez.

In fact, in the Jandía Lighthouse, in Fuerteventura, the same thing happens. "When you dive, you see how the currents have dug into the sand and left a kind of wall of more compact composition 13 meters high by 40 meters long," he says.

Therefore, it is a natural and harmless phenomenon that occurs in many parts of the world due to the force of marine currents and the orography of the seabed.
