The General Directorate of the Police has acknowledged, through an official note, that there are five National Police agents arrested in Arrecife for allegedly participating in a beating of two young men from Arrecife in police facilities last Wednesday.
In the statement, they point out that the Specialized and Violent Crime Unit (UDEV) of the Provincial Brigade of the Judicial Police of Las Palmas has carried out the investigation aimed at clarifying the facts after the complaint of the brothers Nelson and Yari Lemes in Court number 8 of Arrecife.
"As a result, five officials of the National Police Force have been arrested, two of whom have been placed at the disposal of the court, while the remaining three have been released pending being summoned by the Judicial Authority," the note states. The two agents were scheduled to testify before Court number 8 this Friday.
In addition, the Superior Police Headquarters of the Canary Islands indicates that "it has proceeded to the urgent initiation of formal disciplinary proceedings" and has suspended the two arrested agents from their duties in a precautionary and provisional manner. Until this Thursday, when they were arrested, all had continued in their functions, despite the fact that the events occurred on Wednesday of last week and there was already a complaint in the Court.
Fight
The events began in the Parque de los Pinos de Titerroy, in Arrecife, when the two Lemes brothers were preparing to fight with another group of young people. They were arrested and taken to the police station, from where they left with evident signs of having received a beating, according to their complaint. The police accuse them of an alleged crime of assault on authority and injury.
The brothers filed a complaint against the police officers. In said complaint, according to diariodelanzarote.com, they claim that the agents hit them with closed fists and batons on several occasions and even speak of having suffered torture.
Yari Lemes suffers injuries to both eyes and will have to undergo surgery. He also has a perforation in the eardrum in his left ear, as well as bruises on his legs, cervicals, neck and wrists.
His brother Nelson has a broken leg, an injured finger on one hand and his nose. He has lost part of a tooth, has pain in his jaw, bruises on his back, stomach and genitals.
