The Civil Guard has charged a person as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of mistreatment of domestic animals. The indictment was carried out by the Nature Protection Service (Seprona), after finding the animals on the defendant's rural estate, in the municipality of Teguise, with multiple wounds and surrounded by their own excrement. According to the note sent by the Civil Guard, the owner of the animals would have kept them "without food for more than ten days". One of the animals died a few minutes after being rescued by Seprona.
The intervention of the Civil Guard began upon receiving a notice from the Local Police of Teguise about "the possible existence of domestic animals in poor health conditions." After carrying out the corresponding investigation, on January 26, several Seprona agents from the Civil Guard of Costa Teguise traveled to this rural estate "of the chamizo type, located near the Teguise to Famara highway", accompanied by the Local Police and the veterinarian of the City Council.
Among their own excrement, without water or food
When inspecting the place, the agents observed that "the animals, specifically two hunting podencos, were among a large amount of their own excrement, there was no water or food to feed them, and, in addition, they had wounds on their eyes and other parts of the body", explains the Civil Guard in a statement.
The two animals were seized by the agents and deposited in the Teguise Reception Center, at the disposal of the court. However, one of them died a few minutes after arriving.
The defendant, with initials V.M.P.R., was placed at the disposal of the corresponding Arrecife duty court. The Civil Guard has recalled in its note that the crime of mistreatment of domestic animals can mean between 3 months and one year in prison, as well as special disqualification of one to three years for the exercise of profession, trade or business that has a relationship with animals.
