The Local Police of Arrecife has prevented this Tuesday a new attempt of occupation in a house in the neighborhood of La Vega, in the center of the capital of Lanzarote. The property had already been the subject of an occupation last spring.
According to the police force, it was the neighbors themselves who alerted 092 this Tuesday morning after observing two individuals trying to climb one of the walls of the building to access the interior. Immediately, the Local Police headquarters mobilized several patrols, which moved to the scene.
Once there, the agents located two men, one of Spanish nationality and the other born in North Africa. After their identification, it was verified that the Maghreb citizen is in an irregular situation in Spain, in violation of the Immigration Law. In addition, he is a repeat offender, with at least two other attempts to occupy homes in Arrecife.
The attempt was aborted and the foreign citizen was transferred to the National Police Station, from where his expulsion order will be processed through the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands.
The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, directly responsible for the police force, recalled that a special service against occupation has been in operation since May. This pioneering device in Spain includes an exclusive telephone line - 682 27 14 66 - answered 24 hours a day by local agents, to receive citizen notices about possible occupations.
Since its launch, the Local Police has managed to stop nearly a dozen occupations in the city, including a multiple one in an unfinished building of 14 homes in the San Francisco Javier neighborhood.
