The Unified Police Union has demanded that the security measures of all the Police Stations in the Canary Islands be reviewed "urgently" after what happened in Arrecife on Friday night, when a vehicle collided with the access gate, tearing off the fence and climbing the entrance stairs to the building.

"It is certain that due to the early morning hours in which the incident occurred, there have been no injuries or deaths, which we would probably be talking about if such events had occurred during daylight hours with the opening of the documentation and issuance office of ID cards and passports," the union said in a statement. For this reason, it asks that "all necessary physical protection measures" be implemented so that events like these "cannot happen again".

The SUP, which is the majority union in the National Police Force at the national level and also in the archipelago, points out that this episode generated "a great impact on the officials who were serving at that time in the police units, given that it could have been a terrorist attack, since we are at Anti-Terrorist Alert Level 4".

Thus, although in this case the accident was caused by a drunk driver who is currently free on charges, they consider that it is necessary to adopt measures and have conveyed this demand to the Chief of Police of the Canary Islands, expressing their "concern for the safety and working conditions" of the agents.
