The firefighters of the Security and Emergency Consortium have had to evacuate a building on Fred Olsen Avenue in Arrecife this Thursday afternoon after one of the pillars of the building gave way.

According to the manager of the Consortium, Enrique Espinosa, a company was carrying out works on the pillars of the basement, when one of them "bent", whereupon the person in charge of the work called the firefighters, who as a precaution proceeded to evacuate the residents of the building

The firefighters have also cordoned off the area, waiting for the municipal architect, the Cabildo architect and the company architect to appear this Friday to assess the state of the building. Local Police officers have helped in the evacuation, traffic regulation and sealing of the building.

The mayor of Arrecife, Eva de Anta, together with the Councilor for Security, David Duarte, and the Councilor for Security and Emergencies of the Cabildo, Juan Manuel Sosa, have traveled to the scene. De Anta has offered "attention and accommodation" to the residents of the 31 homes in the building, although, according to the mayor, "only one of them is going to a hotel, because the others are going to relatives' homes."
