The Civil Guard had to evacuate one of the beaches of Papagayo this Sunday afternoon after finding an artifact "shaped like a projectile" in the water.

It was an off-duty Local Police officer from Yaiza who alerted the Civil Guard to the discovery at around 7:45 p.m. Agents from the Special Explosives Deactivation Group (GEDEX) traveled to the beach and, after evacuating it, proceeded to the controlled detonation of the device, which was "torpedo-shaped." In addition, according to what they have transferred from the Benemérita, it said 'Warning' and that it contained CO2, which caused the alarm.

Artefacto Papagayo 2

However, initial investigations suggest that the artifact found was not ammunition. Although the Civil Guard is carrying out the pertinent procedures with Maritime Rescue and the Maritime Authority to confirm what it is, from the Benemérita they indicate that it could be either a device used to carry out marine soundings and make topographic maps or a beacon used by ships when they sink.
