The 11th Lanzarote Art Biennial enters its final stretch after six months of activity. During this time, four collective and three individual exhibitions have been held, along with other parallel activities that include screenings, lecture series or round tables.
"After its successful start in September in the context of historical memory and a second phase, on immigration and borders, the Biennial returns, in its third and final stage, with women as the central axis," they point out from the organization. In the words of the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo: "in a critical way, it focuses on the real and current problems that affect humanity from an inclusive and radically democratic perspective."
A program of "deep social content, linked to principles such as equality and respect for diversity, which is carried out by its director, Adonay Bermúdez, making visible structural problems that society must address urgently, with the participation of twelve women artists and Semíramis González as curator," explain from the Cabildo.
Lanzarote, physically distant from the large peninsular art centers, becomes, in this month of March, the nerve center of the artistic scene and transcends its insular borders with proposals of great artistic depth and internationally recognized artists.
'The words we still don't possess'
"The breaking of patriarchal silence, the idea that obsessed the writer Audre Lorde in her work 'Sister Outsider' is the starting point of this collective exhibition curated by Semíramis González and that features work by Marina Vargas, Carmela García, Shadi Gharidian, Doris Salcedo, Martha Rosler, Julia Galán and Agnes Essonti", explain from the Lanzarote Art Biennial.
The works present in this project fluctuate from very diverse perspectives and moments, from historical works to other totally current ones, but they have in common their discourse and capacity to make visible the silences that have condemned the lives of women for decades. "An exhibition that addresses racism, sexual options or beauty canons. 'The words we still don't possess', also vindicates the image as another way of communicating to make visible, to denounce and to transform the world", the organization points out.
'The words we still don't possess' can be visited in the Cube Room of the CIC El Almacén from March 2 to May 20, 2023 with the collaboration of Nueva Colección Pilar Citoler, Contemporánea and MACBA.
