Complying with tradition and with great devotion, the residents of the town of Tao and also from other parts of Lanzarote, every May 22 is entrusted to Santa Rita de Casia. This religious woman lived in the hermitage monastery of Santa María Magdalena and was an Italian saint, beatified by Pope Urban VIII in 1626 and canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1900. Her representative symbols are roses, figs and poppies.
At 7:00 p.m. the Eucharist began, presided over by the parish priest of San Bartolomé, Francisco José García, with the two naves of the church full. In the homily, the priest recounted the stormy life that Santa Rita lived when she was very young, since when she was only 14 years old her parents forced her to marry a man much older than her with whom she led a life full of suffering, so she took refuge in prayer.
After the Eucharist, the procession began through the streets near the church, headed by the image of Santa Rita, followed by the celebrating priest, the municipal authorities and the parishioners, thus complying with a tradition honoring Santa Rita de Casia, patron saint of the impossible.
