Guanapay Celebrates its XXIX Festival with an Emotional Night of Music, Tradition, and Homage in Teguise

The historic folkloric group gathered numerous attendees in Santo Domingo for a special evening alongside Sa Revetla de Sant Antoni from Mallorca and with recognitions to the Esperanza Spínola theater company on its bicentennial

The great family of the Guanapay Folkloric Group of Teguise celebrated its XXIX Festival this Saturday at the Santo Domingo convent in La Villa. Always supported by the numerous public, faithful followers of the group that with so much enthusiasm and work year after year prepares this event always giving the best of themselves with the commitment that our songs and dances exponents of our culture are not lost with the passage of the years.

For this edition, Guanapay had a representation from the island of Mallorca, the Sa Revetla de Sant Antoni Group. It is a folkloric group of music and dance created in 1981 with the main objective of recreating and preserving customs and traditions of dances, clothing and music, in order to keep alive the life of the countryside from past centuries to our days, as far as possible.

Currently it has 50 members and a very varied repertoire of jotas, boleros, Mallorcan and Menorcan fandangos. Since its creation it has made several performances inside and outside the autonomous community visiting countries and cities such as Alicante, Murcia, Castellón, Cantabria, Gran Canaria, France, Portugal, Mexico, Ireland, Italy etc. The public enjoyed the wide selection of themes offered, the most traditional of music, songs and dances of Mallorca receiving as a reward the resounding applause throughout his performance.

Within its festival Guanapay recognized the cultural work that is being carried out by the components, actors and actresses of the theater company 'Esperanza Spínola', from Teguise that is celebrating the 200th anniversary. At present the components continue very excited taking their works through the stages of the island.

On the occasion of Mother's Day, 3 boys and 1 girl went on stage to sing some seguidillas dedicated to mothers, an performance that was very applauded by the public present.

Next, the organizers and hosts, the 45 members, women and men of the Guanapay Folkloric Group formed by the body of touch and dance, took the stage.

Guanapay with more than 70 years in its history, is a clear reference of the music and dances of the Canary Islands, worthy representatives of La Villa de Teguise, Lanzarote and the Canary Islands. Always concerned about keeping alive respecting the inherited legacy taking care of the smallest detail adding new verses, some of them collected from those presented in the Canary Islands Verse Contest convened each year with the support of the City Council of Teguise.

Guanapay for such a special night chose the most representative of traditional music and dances such as seguidillas, malagueñas, folías and isas.

The festival was presided over by the mayoress of the City Council of Teguise Olivia Duque, the Councilor of Culture, Francisco Javier Díaz, corporation colleagues and the Councilor of Culture of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Jesús Machín Tavío.
